What Happens After the Pokémon 30th Anniversary Hype? The 25th May Give Us a Warning

Categories :

Pokémon’s 30th Anniversary is clearly not dead. Products are still moving. Collectors are still chasing cards. Demand remains strong, and the Pokémon Center 30th Anniversary ETB is still around RM1,266 according to the latest market data you shared.

But that’s not really the question.

The more interesting question is:

What happens when the 30th Anniversary is no longer the newest and hottest thing in Pokémon? Because every hype cycle eventually gets old.

The 30th Is Already Showing Two Different Markets

Less than a month into the 30th Anniversary Celebration, we’re already seeing something interesting.

Sealed products and singles aren’t behaving the same way.

30th Anniversary Product/Card Current Recent Movement
Pokémon Center ETB RM1,266.10 -37.37% over 1 month
Regular ETB RM651.43 -12.65% over 1 month
Booster Bundle RM302.48 -20.55% over 1 month
Mewtwo ex 157/128 RM178.40 -95.63% over 1 month
Pikachu ex 150/128 RM356.39 -73.95% over 1 month
Mewtwo ex 151/128 RM207.07 -58.12% over 1 month
Mew ex 152/128 RM383.87 -53.00% over 1 month

The singles correction has been particularly brutal.

Mewtwo ex 157/128 has fallen roughly 95.6% across the tracked one-month period, while Pikachu ex 150/128 is down almost 74%.

Yet people are still buying Pokémon.

That’s important.

Falling prices don’t automatically mean falling interest.

Sometimes they simply mean the initial prices were created under extreme hype and limited early supply.

Now Look at the 25th Anniversary

This is where history becomes useful.

Celebrations launched for Pokémon’s 25th Anniversary in 2021. Today, several of its major sealed products are worth substantially more than they were a few years ago.

25th Anniversary Sealed Product Earlier Tracked Value Current Value 2-Year Movement
Ultra Premium Collection ~RM1,365 RM5,044.84 +269.47%
Pokémon Center ETB ~RM416 RM2,078.74 +399.87%
Regular ETB ~RM322 RM1,456.26 +352.89%

Look at those numbers and it becomes tempting to conclude:

“Just buy 30th Anniversary sealed and wait.”

But that’s exactly where we need to be careful.

What Happened Between the 25th Launch and Today’s Prices?

The 25th Anniversary wasn’t followed by endless hype.

Pokémon went through quieter periods.

Products became easier to find. Certain sets sat on shelves. Collectors moved on to other interests. The urgency to buy everything immediately disappeared.

Then eventually attention returned.

Pokémon 151 helped bring huge nostalgia back into the market. Social media collecting content exploded again. Older sealed products suddenly looked interesting to a new generation of buyers.

That’s how collectible cycles work.

Interest doesn’t move in a straight line.

It comes in waves.

Why 2027 Could Be Very Different From 2026

Right now, 30th Anniversary products have everything going for them.

Anniversary marketing.

Nostalgia.

People lining up.

Social media hype.

Collectors returning.

Speculators buying sealed.

Everyone talking about Pokémon.

But what will be the headline in 2027?

The 30th Anniversary will already be yesterday’s news.

Collectors will have opened thousands more products. PSA populations will grow. Another new Pokémon set will become the hot release.

And some people who bought five, ten or twenty boxes as “investments” may eventually decide they want their cash back.

That’s when the real test begins.

There’s One Big Difference This Time

Today’s market understands sealed investing much better than it did five years ago.

During previous eras, plenty of products were simply opened.

Today, almost everybody has seen charts showing old Pokémon boxes appreciating.

So more people deliberately keep products sealed.

That creates an interesting problem:

If everybody is saving something because they believe it will become rare, how rare will it actually become?

A 25th Anniversary UPC becoming a RM5,000 product doesn’t automatically mean today’s 30th Anniversary ETB will follow the same path.

Different supply. Different entry price. Different number of people holding sealed inventory.

Same Pokémon doesn’t mean same investment result.

A Price Correction Doesn’t Mean Pokémon Is Dying

This is probably the biggest misunderstanding.

Imagine the 30th Anniversary hype cools dramatically in 2027.

Queues disappear.

Products become easier to buy.

Singles fall further.

Social media engagement drops.

That doesn’t necessarily mean Pokémon has failed.

It could simply mean the hype cycle has ended.

The 25th Anniversary shows why patience matters. Its sealed products didn’t need uninterrupted hype every year to eventually appreciate substantially.

But it also doesn’t guarantee the 30th will repeat that performance.

The Real Question for 30th Anniversary Buyers

Instead of asking:

“Will Pokémon still be popular?”

Ask:

“What happens to this product when people stop talking about it every day?”

That’s the environment that actually tests a collectible.

If demand remains strong after the queues disappear, after social media moves on and after the next big set arrives, then we start learning what collectors genuinely value.

Right now, we’re still inside the hype.

And history suggests the more interesting part of the Pokémon 30th Anniversary story may begin after everyone stops talking about it.
